Does anyone know how to flash a ROM to a phone?

I have a chinese phone which seems to be 'soft bricked'?!? Apparently I need to do a clean install, flash a ROM, blah, blah, blah! I am okay techy wise but this is beyond me.
Can anyone help? I can find threads on forums of people doing without actually mentioning a step by step walkthrough.
Long shot I know but if anyone could help i'd appreciate it, I want to pass this on to my son, it;s a decent spec and seems too good to bin.

Spandex - if you're into TWRP recovery that's a good start.

Thanks for the xda website. I punch in the model (LeTV x600) and get lots of threads but no idea where to go?!
I can boot up into something called TWRP from off (power +up volume key) or standard powering on goes to what looks like a simple install with a couple of options but as it's all in chinese I wouldn't know for sure!

Depends on the model, most makers have different ways of accessing the bootloader
